Philosophy Questions

Within EDU 402 my class brainstormed questions that relate to education and to the three categories of philosophy; metaphysics, epistemology, and axiology.
Epistemology answers questions about how and what we know as truth. The questions that most stuck out to me from this section were; how do we decide truth and who decides truth? This question is increasingly prevalent in today’s society. There are issues with ‘fake news’ where people do not know what to believe because the sources of information that should be reliable are bending to the will of people with things to hide and things to gain from lying. Helping students discern between truth and lie is so important. It will help them to be more knowledgeable citizens and it will help students develop their own ideas outside of their parents’ ideals.

Axiology looks at values and morals. One question that I really think I can apply to the classroom is, Where/how did morals come to be? This isn’t something that can be addressed as a whole class, but it is a question to pose to an entire class to think of on their own. How did each student develop what they know? How each student can find ways to continue to develop their morality or how they can reshape it to something they understand.

Metaphysics answers questions about reality. The questions that I found interesting were; Why do abstract concepts/works matter in reality, what makes up reality, How do concepts connect to everyday life? All these questions can relate more to science because science is so rooted in the reality of the world that as a teacher I need to make sure students are able to understand their own reality. I believe that Metaphysics is the most important branch out of these three philosophies. Metaphysics relates to the world around us and what makes up our own realities. I believe that everyone designs their own reality. With science as my concentration, I will want my students to understand the reality of proven scientific advancements. Since it is possible for what we know in science today to be proven wrong tomorrow, it is essential for students to understand how realities can change when we look at things through a new lenses and then the science can change.
